Summer Reading & Extra Credit Opportunity
Our students are exhibiting a steady growth in their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. To continue this positive trend, we would like to encourage our students to continue to read during the summer so they do not lose any of the reading skills they have worked so hard to gain throughout the year.
We have compiled a list of suggested reading books for our students based on grade level. Also, check out the information regarding an extra-credit opportunity for our incoming 6th-8th grade students (to be added to their first quarter English Literature grade).
As parents, you know that the benefits of reading are many. You also know that in some cases, the challenge lies in motivating children to read more regularly. The following are some tips and strategies from Reading is Fundamental (http://www.rif.org/) to help you incorporate reading activities into your child’s daily routine, as well as some helpful sites you can visit for more literacy activity ideas, games, and suggestions to further encourage good reading habits in your child:
- Keep plenty of books and other reading materials at home.
- Read books with your children. Children of any age can appreciate being read to.
- Be a good role model — let your children see you reading.
- Learn more about your child's interests and suggest books, magazines, and articles that relate to those topics.
- Sometimes good movies are a starting point for pleasure reading — after seeing a movie based on a book, children may be motivated to read the book.
- Sometimes travel sparks reading, and finding books that relate to a place you have visited during a family vacation can grab a child’s interest.
