Armenian Studies

Objective: Our Armenian Studies program is crafted to enrich our students with a deep understanding and appreciation of their Armenian heritage. We integrate the study of the Armenian language, culture, and history into their education, aiming to foster a strong sense of identity, belonging, and self-awareness. A primary goal is to achieve proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the Armenian language, laying a foundation for future contributions to language as thriving adults. This well-rounded approach not only connects students to their cultural legacy but also prepares them to be active participants in its preservation and evolution, building their confidence and perspective as global citizens.

Curriculum Progression: Students from TK through 8th grade receive two periods of Armenian studies daily, covering Eastern and Western Armenian dialects, along with Armenian history, culture, and heritage. Starting with basic language skills, the curriculum advances to complex comprehension, oral expression, grammar, literature studies, and essay writing. The inclusion of Armenian history alongside global social studies provides a unique dual perspective, cultivating critical thinkers by junior high who are adept at analyzing history through both Armenian and global lenses.

 

Cultural Engagement: A focal point of our school year is Armenian Cultural Month, leading to the celebrated Annual Cultural Day. This immersive experience features student performances in poetry, dance, theater, music, and traditional attire, deepening their connection to Armenian heritage and sharing it with the school community. Our curriculum extends beyond the classroom through guest speakers, field trips, and collaborations with Armenian organizations. Notably, our 6th graders visit Fresno, the site of the first Armenian American community, and our 8th graders take a pilgrimage to Armenia, offering them a profound connection to the land and culture they have studied throughout the years. These activities offer students first hand exposure to their heritage, further deepening their connection to Armenian culture and history.

 

Resources: Leveraging modern technology and project-based learning, our program promotes interactive education and collaborative experiences. Students participate in activities from language-enhancing games to hands-on projects such as cooking, music, dancing, and art. Annual updates to textbooks, workbooks, and tailored pacing guides, alongside innovative differentiation strategies, ensure our curriculum remains engaging and accessible to all learners. To best meet the needs of our evolving student body, we ensure our Armenian teachers are continuously advancing their skills through development opportunities and training programs. This commitment to ongoing education keeps our teaching staff at the forefront of educational practices, ready to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing learning environment.

 

Վարժարանիս մէջ դասաւանդութեան պետական ծրագիրին զուգընթաց կը դասաւանդենք հայագիտական նիւթեր, որոնց ծրագիրը մշակուած է Ազգային Առաջնորդարանի Խնամակալ Մարմինին կողմէ: Այս ծրագիրը հայերէն լեզուն, հայոց պատմութիւնն ու հայկական մշակոյթը սորվեցնելու եւ իւրացնելու կը միտի: Այս առումով, Շամլեան Ազգային վարժարանէն շրջանաւարտ աշակերտը պիտի տիրապետէ հայերէն լեզուով սահուն ընթերցանութեան, կարդացածը ըմբռնելու եւ բերանացի արտայայտուելու կարողութեան, պիտի ունենայ հարուստ բառապաշար եւ միտքը գրաւոր ձեւով  արտայայտելու կարողութիւն, ինչպէս նաեւ ձեռք պիտի ձգէ հայերէն տառերով մեքենագրելու հմտութիւն, հայոց պատմութեան մէջ տեղի ունեցած կարեւորագոյն դէպքերուն պիտի ծանօթանայ եւ կրօնաբարոյական դաստիարակութիւն ստանայ:

 

Շամլեան Ազգային վարժարանէն ներս հայերէն լեզուն կը դասաւանդուի արեւելահայերէն եւ արեւմտահայերէն ճիւղերով: Իւրաքանչիւր կարգ օժտուած է ընթերցանութեան, հայոց պատմութեան եւ կրօնի դասագիրքերով իրենց արեւելեահայերէն եւ արեւմտահայերէն տարբերակներով: Դասաւանդութիւնը հետաքրքրական եւ մատչելի դարձնելու նպատակով կ’օգտագործուին արհեստագիտական արդիական զանազան միջոցներ ինչպէս օրինակ՝ համակարգչային զանազան խաղեր եւ ծրագիրներ, ուսումնասիրական աշխատանքներ, գիրքի ընթերցում - ամփոփում, շարադրութիւններ եւ խմբական աշխատանքներ: Հայրենաւանդ ուսուցիչները իւրաքանչիւր կարգի համար պատրաստած են յատուկ ուղեգիծ-ծրագիր մը, որ կը գոհացնէ ուսումնական տարբեր մակարդակներ ունեցող աշակերտներուն պահանջները:
